God Is 'Tob'

I had a secretary years ago whose father's name was Tob. Tob is the Hebrew word for good. It is pronounced tov but the English spelling is Tob. Of course Tob begins with one of two Hebrew letters for our T and in the Teth section of Psalm 119, God's goodness is the theme. Tov is used five times:

v. 65 — "You have dealt GOOD with Your servant." v. 66 — "Teach me GOOD discernment and knowledge." v. 68 — "You are GOOD and do GOOD." v. 71 — "It is GOOD for me that I was afflicted." v. 72 — "The law of Your mouth is GOOD to me, better than thousands of gold and silver."

Due to the heat and the drowsiness that comes on me around daylight, I've been leaving the office and working outside until 10:00 am or so. I did this all of last week. I didn't do it without talking to my boss about it and of course I asked Him for His blessing. I had a great week: got a lot done with no accidents or mishaps. So as I walked back into the office at 10:30 last Thursday, I walked in praising the LORD for His goodness to me. My cup was running over with thanksgiving. When I sat down and opened my Bible to my Psalm, it was Teth in Psalm 119. I couldn't believe it! It was the perfect Psalm for the moment. God has dealt good to me and I rejoice now as I look back over my 77 years that He taught me most, if not all of what I know, through affliction and His word. I can honestly join David in saying, "It was good that I was afflicted."

I don't know what will happen tomorrow or even before this day is done, but it doesn't matter — GOD IS GOOD! I do know that last Thursday I participated in the COLS of a 64 year old man who I have known since he was 17. This man had one of the most godly mothers I have ever known, and she came as close to a Job experience as anyone I've ever known. Her parents abandoned her when she was a baby and she was raised by her grandmother. She did eventually have a relationship with her mom but her dad wanted nothing to do with her. She attended the COLS of three of her six children. She basically witnessed two of them being killed in an accident. Her husband passed on Christmas Eve one year and her daughter passed on Christmas day the very next year. There is more, much more but I can't share it. She suffered one heartbreak after the other and yet she never complained and like Job, she refused to curse God. She was a sweet spirited encourager who poured all the love she had into her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She did not have one bitter bone in her body. She believed to her last breath as I do that GOD IS TOB!

I do praise the LORD for the rain. We got less than an inch but just enough to keep everything going and I loved the two cooler days. Of course it heated back up yesterday and I think we have one more week of extreme heat. There are people who love the hot weather: June Bailey, Don Widner, and Tyler Thompson; but most of us are looking forward to fall.

We collected $2,677.00 yesterday at the POINT for THE WORD FOR THE WORLD project. We lack $1,103.00 reaching our goal of 108 verses. GRACE POINT is running point on this MORGAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION project. There will be churches participating from now to THANKSGIVING. Thank you Grace Pointers for giving generously. Join me in praying for the other $1,103.00.

Slidder and Hotdog supper Wednesday night September 16. We will be eating inside due to the heat.

Monday October 26…we are hosting THE MORGAN BAPTIST ANNUAL MEETING here at the POINT. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I doubt that we have more than 60 people total. The Annual meetings are poorly attended these days. I have asked the 49ers to help and this will be our October 49er gathering. You do not have to attend the meeting. Just bring your food and join us for lunch. We will get the KFC, drinks and rolls but we need your help with the other things. It will work if we have a servant's heart!

October 28 is our Bill Smith Jambalaya Supper and our November Wednesday night meal falls on Veterans Day, November 11, and we are having a stew and Joe is going to have us a video of our veterans at the round table. After the Stew in November, there will be no more Wednesday night suppers until Spring.
